Miscellaneous Purchases

Here’s some items I’ve purchased over many years, that were never documented.

This is the Snapon 8mm external socket needed for the drain plugs on the car. It has gone up in price since 2008, and there are alternatives available. I haven’t had any issues with the Snapon socket.

Here’s a tool that will lock the flywheel in place while you remove either the flywheel, or the crank pulley. I’m not sure why I bought it since I don’t have an engine with a flywheel.

Stainless blending pads, a box of 10. 12 years later, I’ve used 2 of them.

US Motor Works Water Pump for a Volvo from Rockauto. I purchased this with other items I’ve listed on the blog, so I’ve left the shipping as $0. A bolt-on pulley is needed for this pump, which I currently do not own. These pumps don’t have the country they were manufactured in listed, and the quality is notoriously poor. I would maybe use this in the short term while waiting for a quality waterpump to be delivered. I couldn’t pass up a $22 waterpump:

Roadkill.com Article!!!

While showing my car at a local car show, someone stopped to talk about the car, and was asking a lot of detailed questions. Sure enough, he’s a writer for RoadKill.com! The writer, Eric, asked about writing an article on the car. In September, we got together after several emails. We did a photoshoot, and an interview. In November 2016, it was published!

Check it out: http://www.roadkill.com/great-scott-hung-delorean-national-laboratory/

Roadkill has become one of my favorite shows. It is a big honor that there’s an article about my car, and me, on Roadkill.com!
Thank you, Eric!

New Trunk Board

My original carpet was looking ratty, and my car was also missing the board below the carpet. I decided to make a new board that would replace the carpet. It also needs cutouts for the strut bar that I use in the trunk. I traced a friend’s trunk board:

Then, I cut it out with a jigsaw. I cleaned up the cuts with a rotary tool, and roughed up the surface with some sandpaper:

Next I coated it with Duplicolor Undercoating. The undercoating didn’t spray evenly, and I got some globs in random places. I ended up purposely making more globs, trying to even it out and complete the look:

Not bad for the cost.

New(er) Taillight housings

My taillights were cracked, and dull from a decade of neglect and abuse in the hot Georgia sun. The removable piece from one taillight was even melted from a bulb!?!?

I had become jealous of the glassy, perfect appearance of the taillights on other Deloreans. So I found a good deal on some used, but good condition taillight housings. They don’t appear faded, and only have light surface scratches:

Newer taillights before cleaning:

To clean them, I would fill them with hot water, and drain them, removing all the dirt and bugs.
Cleaning Tip: You can clean all the grooves between the lenses with an old toothbrush, which should not scratch the plastic.

After a soap and water cleaning, they looked better. Some light surface scratches visible

After some buffing with Meguiar’s PlastX, any dirt has now been removed, and the scratches are gone. They really pop!

The polish really removes any deep dirt. The white terrycloth towel used to be clean.

Old housings on the left, newer on the right:

With new taillight housings costing $300, I saved some money, and I’m very happy with the results. As for my previous taillight housings, I might try to sand off any imperfections, and black them out. That should cover up the cracks. If they turn out nice, I would swap housings whenever I felt like it.

Old Radiator Sold!

I replaced my radiator last year with a newer improved all-aluminum model. My old plastic-tanked radiator was still functional. I found someone online looking for a radiator, and they were interested in mine.

New DeLoreans?

So the LA Times ran an article with an interview with James of DMC (Houston):

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-garage28jul28,0,7786124.story?coll=la-home-center

The article mentions DMC (Houston) will be building new cars. I believe James has mentioned in the past they’ll need to make new fiberglass underbodies since their supply is low. I believe this means new VIN tags. Which translates into “New DeLoreans.” This caught the attention of several other news outlets including Slashdot:

http://slashdot.org/articles/07/07/29/1259202.shtml

Get ready to read several hundred flux capacitor, 1.21 Gigawatts, plutonium, and cocaine jokes, and several other comments about how the car was a poor performer and all around disaster. Nothing that hasn’t been beaten to death before.

There are many DeLoreans available in any condition – just check ebay, and the for sale listings on various DeLorean websites. If you want one, you can find it. I believe the market for new DeLoreans would be minimal, and a DMC (Houston) refurbished DeLorean is completed mostly with news parts anyway. I don’t think we’re going to see “New DeLoreans” anytime soon.

DMCTalk.com has a good discussion going on this topic: http://www.dmctalk.com/showthread.php?t=6597

Still, I’ve had several people over the last few days say they’ve heard about the new DeLoreans coming soon. Whatever.

Police Officer: Thumbs Up

I drove The D to work last Friday. While sitting at a stoplight, a police officer heading in the opposite direction drives by, looks me in the eye, and gives me a thumbs up. How about that? Maybe the Police Officers in my town are nicer than others (They’ve waved to me during my morning run). But seriously, when is the last time a cop showed his approval for your car?
